A YOUNG LION’S FINEST MOMENT – YALE’S JORDAN BLACKMAN

Yale’s Jordan Blackman reminded everyone of former Yale standout Joel Friesen on Saturday at War Gym. (PNG photo)

VANCOUVER — For Jordan Blackman, Saturday afternoon was almost like paying tribute to his basketball brother.

Three years ago, in the 2008 B.C. boys high school all-star game at UBC’s War Memorial Gym, Joel Friesen of Abbotsford’s Yale Secondary School scored a game-high 24 points in his final prep game before embarking on his CIS career the next season with the Fraser Valley Cascades.

On Saturday, Blackman, three years Friesen’s junior, but now a senior himself at Yale, scored a game-high 22 points on the very same floor in the 2011 B.C. all-star classic, leading Team Goulet to a 93-81 win over Team Eberhardt.

And like Friesen, Blackman is set to begin his CIS career close to home in the fall with UFV’s Cascades.

“Me and Joel are like brothers,” admitted Blackman after the game. “When I first moved to Abbotsford, our moms were really good friends and when I was like four or five years old, we actually lived together.

“So he’s like my mentor, my brother,” the 6-foor-4 Blackman continued. “Every time I have a question about basketball, I go to him.”

Blackman didn’t need anyone’s advice when he scored 10 points in a span of 2:26 late in the third quarter, his spurt putting the game away for Team Goulet.

First he dropped a trey, then he completed a three-point play from the free throw line after an explosive dribble-drive move to the rim. Next came a fast break layin, and then with 14 seconds left in the quarter, a vicious slam dunk.

“My team couldn’t make it to the B.C.’s,” said Blackman of the Lions who had won the B.C. Triple A title in 2010, “but it was good to come here and make a statement that Yale can play.”

Malcolm Williams of Pitt Meadows added 12 points for the winners, while forward Warren Liang of Vancouver’s Sir Charles Tupper added another 12.

B.C. Triple A MVP Vijay Dhillon of Richmond’s R.C. Palmer led Team Eberhardt with 18 points. Yale’s Nakai Luyken, Southern Okanagan’s Perry Auklakh and Palmer’s Mike Zayas each added 14 points.

GIRLS ALL-STAR GAME

Some of the best players you’d perhaps never heard of wound up stealing a lot of the spotlight in a B.C. girls all-star game that will be remembered as much for what happened after the first quarter as any other time in the game.

In the end, Team Thompson topped Team Beauchamp 92-75 but not before the two teams pulled off a six-player trade after the first quarter of the game.

Leading 28-8 after the first quarter, Team Thompson, coached by W.J. Mouat’s Paula Thompson, swapped its first three players by numerical order on the game roster for the first three on Team Beauchamp, coach by Steve Beauchamp of B.C. Double A semifinalist Holy Cross Secondary of Surrey.

The swap went a long ways towards turning a 30-point (41-11) Team Thompson lead midway through the second quarter into a much tigher eight-point game (63-55) early in the fourth quarter.

But beyond the oddities of the player swap, the showcase gave great opportunity for some of the province’s top small-school players to show their stuff.

“I think you forget sometimes that it doesn’t matter if it’s Single, Double or Triple A, you have a lot of girls playing basketball these days,” said Beauchamp. “And you saw today where skills have improved so much and that basketball is pretty healthy in the province.”

Despite coming up short, Team Beauchamp’s most eye-opening performance came from Single A standout guard Vivienne Veerman of Abbotsford Christian who knocked down three treys and scored a team-high 14 points.

Team Thompson, however, had too much down the stretch drive, led by double-figure performances from four of its CIS-bound stars. The UBC-bound pair of Adrienne Parkin (Kitsilano) and Stephanie Bell (North Van-Argyle) each scored 15 points, Victoria Vikes-bound guard Shaylyn Crisp (Victoria-Claremont) had 15 and B.C. Triple A MVP and future Cascade Kayli Sartori (W.J. Mouat) had 14.

Team Beauchamp got 12 points from Washington State-bound forward Shalie Dheensaw. SFU’s soon-to-be freshman Erin Chambers (Mission-Heritage Park) and Michelle Schmidt of Vanderhoof’s Nechako Valley each scored 10 points.

TRACK AND FIELD

Christian Gravel of Vancouver’s St. George’s was honored with the senior boys outstanding performance on Saturday at The Province Gran Forza indoor track and field meet held at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Gravel won the senior boys 800 metres (1:58.23) and helped his Saints finish in a first-place tie with Vancouver College.

On the senior girls side, Killarney won the team title, bolstered by Tanya Humeniuk’s winning 800-metre effort (2:19.92). Lord Byng’s Devan Wiebe won the 60-metre sprint (6.97 seconds) and was named outstanding performer.

Semiahmoo’s Chelsea Ribero was the oustanding performer in the female juvenile division, helping her Surrey-based Totems to the team title. In juvenile boys, Pitt Meadows won the team title while Kenny Schultz of West Van’s Rockridge was named most outstanding performer.

CHARLES BEST 3 NORTH DELTA 2 (OT): B.C. TRIPLE A HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER FINAL

BURNABY — It had been a dozen years since the B.C. boys Triple A soccer championships have had a repeat winner, illustrating the fact that you have to be good, but you also have to be a little bit lucky.

Coquitlam’s Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils spent the first two days of this season’s championship tournament showing their work ethic, and they used that momentum to build a well-earned 2-0 lead in the opening 24 minutes of Friday afternoon’s title tilt against the North Delta Huskies.

The lucky part?

Well, after taking North Delta’s best shot, one which resulted in the Dawgs tying the game 2-2 early in the second half, they somehow managed to hold the fort and take the game into overtime, ultimately winning the game 30 seconds into overtime on an own goal after Best midfielder Fahim Karmali’s free kick deflected off a North Delta player and past keeper Ricky Brar to make the 3-2 final complete.

The Blue Devils became the first repeat champions since Victoria’s Mount Douglas Rams pulled the trick 1997-98.

“It was a crazy, crazy game,” admitted Karmali as Best opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Austin Derksen beat a charging Brar to a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area and scored his sixth goal of the tournament, followed just six minutes later by an in-close header by defender Challen Rogers that eluded Brar. “They came back, and they had all the momentum. We just tried to hang on.”

North Delta, seeking its first title since 2002, pulled to within a goal 10 minutes before halftime when Irindeep Kooner turned a corner and blasted the ball past keeper Brando Ciccone. Then four minutes into the second half, Huskies’ star midfielder Ryan Dhillon beat Ciccone from in close to cap a furious rally inside the Best penalty area.

“We were ranked 15th heading in and we came in with the last berth from the Fraser Valley so no one was expecting anything from us,” said Derksen, who last season was forced to watch from the sidelines after moving to Coquitlam from Prince George. “But we just came in and we played our game.”

Said North Delta head coach Gurpaul Sohal: “The boys are gutted but they showed character to come back from 2-0.”

In the moments after the game ended, a brief melee ensued after a Charles Best supporter ran in front of the North Delta cheering section and taunted the Huskies’ fans.

ARGYLE’S PIPERS PLAY A WINNING TUNE

3603.Argyle Argyle Pipers hope to avenge BC finals loss

NORTH VANCOUVER — Since the start of last season, the Argyle Pipers senior girls soccer team has tasted defeat just one time.

Yet it’s the heartbreaking nature of that loss that has the Triple A No. 1-ranked North Vancouver team and its core of graduating seniors more determined than ever to win the final game of its 2011 campaign.

Last season, the Pipers took an undefeated record into championship game of the B.C. Triple A provincial tournament in Victoria where they played the hometown Claremont Spartans to a scoreless draw before losing in the seventh round of penalty kicks. In the most recent Top 10 rankings, Claremont was perched at No. 2, suggesting that if everything played to form the rest of the way, that a rematch of last season’s final isn’t out of the question.

Yet if losing in the fashion they did wasn’t tough enough, the four seniors on last season’s team had been forced to leave the side midway through the previous day’s semifinal win over Kelowna’s Mt. Boucherie Bears in order to attend to graduation functions in North Vancouver.

This season, an Argyle team bolstered by an even larger core of senior talent is doing everything in its power to try and win the title that eluded them a year ago. And the best part is that if the Pipers can qualify for the June 2-4 provincials in Kamloops, there won’t be any conflicts. Argyle’s grad night doesn’t happen until the following weekend.

“This group has played together in the comminity and they’ve got a tremendous amount of talent,” says Pipers’ head coach Darren Rath whose team twice rallied from deficits on Monday, getting the winning goal from senior Jessie de Boer to edge crosstown rival Handsworth 3-2 and head into the postseason with a 12-0-0 record. “They have a will to win and they have been building towards hopefully winning a provincial championship this year. They want to go out on top. They want to graduate as champions.”

That committee of seniors, many who have been with the varsity since Grade 9, is led by de Boer, its captain and two-time team MVP. Striker Kate Steele, midfielders Alexandra Aulin-Hayes, Madeline Carrillo and Torri Matheson, defender Shannon Madill and versatile Alex Blanchard form the rest of a senior core, with goalkeeping duties handled by Grade 10 Austin Studer and Samantha Chang-Foidl.

The Pipers will play the Burnaby-New Westminster champs this coming week, with the winner earning an automatic berth to the provincials.

The rest of the most recent top 10 has Fraser Valley powers South Delta, Dr. Charles Best of Coquitlam and Coquitlam’s Centennial sitting in spots 3-5. New Westminster is sixth, Surrey’s Panorama Ridge seventh, Sardis eighth, Kelowna ninth and Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey in 10th.

Also scheduled for the June 2-4 weekend: The B.C. girls Double A soccer championships in Port Coquitlam, and the B.C. girls Single A soccer finals in Victoria.

7633.Brent Sweeney, S Burns Sun Devils put youth to test at B.C. girls soccer provincials

TSAWWASSEN — Last season, the South Delta Sun Devils earned a berth to the B.C. senior girls Triple A soccer championships with what was essentially a junior-aged team.

This season, as the 2011 championships open a three-day run beginning today at Kamloops’ McArthur Island Park, Tsawwassen’s finest are still one of the youngest sides entered in the 16-team event.

Yet coaches Steve Burns and Brent Sweeney have seen the positives that have resulted from 2010′s season-long trial by fire.

“Even though we made the provincials last season, I would say that this season’s team has been a surprise for us because we don’t have any Grade 12 starters,” says Burns, whose team last won the B.C. title in 2008 with a veteran-laden squad. “We’ve had big turnover the past few years, but that said this is probably the hardest working team I have had in my 14 years coaching here.”

That work rate will be especially important.

The Sun Devils showed it all season en route to a 7-0-0 record with 28 goals for and just four against as they won the Fraser Valley South league title.

They capped a successful Valley playoff run by winning the conference post-season tournament, beating Coquitlam’s Dr. Charles Best 1-0 in overtime on a goal by sniper Nicole Sydor, then got goals from Abbey Rekis and Tara Nordin in a 2-0 title game win over Surrey’s Panorama Ridge.

South Delta and defending B.C. champion Claremont of Victoria are the top two seeds on the top half of the draw, while North Vancouver’s undefeated Argyle Pipers and Vancouver’s Point Grey Greyhounds own the top seeds on the bottom half of the draw.

And if jitters come with youth, then the tradition that Burns and Sweeney have upheld for years will definitely come in handy as it pertains to taking the pre-match pressure off.

For years, the pair have surprised their players by donning costumes ranging from disco dancers to chefs to leprechauns.

“Yes,” Burns confirmed as the team made its way up to Kamloops on Wednesday, “we will be wearing our costumes again.”

The 16-team bracket is split into four pools, and the winners of each pool advance to the semifinals (1, 3 p.m. Friday). The championship final is slated for 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The full tournament draw is located at kamloops2011.ca.

Also on the slate this weekend:

*The B.C. senior girls Double A provincials run today through Saturday at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Topping the field of seeds are defending B.C. champion Burnsview Griffins of North Delta, St. Thomas More Knights of Burnaby, Parkville’s Ballenas Whalers and Kamloops’ Sa-Hali Sabres. Semifinals go at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Friday with the championship game slated for an 11 a.m. Saturday start.

*The B.C. Single A championships run today through Saturday in Victoria.

KAMLOOPS — The host South Kamloops Titans are one win away from joining the best senior girls Triple A soccer teams in Friday’s semifinal round at the 2011 B.C. championships.

South Kamloops opened play in Pool D Thursday at the McArthur Island Sports Complex with a 2-0 win over No. 1 seeded Point Grey of Vancouver, then followed with a 2-1 win over Fraser Valley runner-up Panorama Ridge of Surrey in its second game.

All teams finish pool play with Friday morning games, so that means if the Titans can top Sardis in a 9 a.m. contest, it would win its pool and advance to the semifinals later in the day.

On the same side of the draw, North Vancouver’s undefeated powerhouse Argyle Pipers finished the play as Pool C leaders with a pair of wins. The Pipers edged Fraser Valley Final Four finisher Dr. Charles Best of Coquitlam 2-1, then followed with a 7-0 win over Prince George. If Argyle beats Oak Bay in a 9 a.m. Friday game, it would go on to face the top team from Pool D in the semifinals.

On the other side of the draw:

Pool A: Defending B.C. champion Claremont Spartans of Victoria put up a pair of clean sheets, leading its pool with a 3-0 win over Coquitlam’s Centennial, followed by a 5-0 win over Mt. Baker from Cranbrook. Claremont can earn a semifinal berth with a win against Kelowna. However that won’t be easy. The Owls drew 2-2 with Centennial and beat Mt. Baker 1-0. If Kelowna beats Claremont, it would then earn the semifinal berth.

Pool B: Fraser Valley champion South Delta sits at 2-0 after it recorded a pair of shutout wins. South Delta topped Kitsilano 3-0 and followed with a 1-0 win over Surrey’s Lord Tweedsmuir. The Devils can book a semifinal berth if it can get past Sentinel of West Vancouver on Friday.

Semifinals are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. Friday with the Saturday’s finale kicking off at 11:30 a.m.

BC Girls Soccer finals: Claremont, Burnsview earn shots at B.C. title repeats

Here’s our recap of the Double A and Triple A BC girls soccer championships, which concluded Friday with semifinal contests:

DOUBLE A

BURNABY — The Burnsview Griffins went into last year’s B.C. senior girls Double A soccer champions as complete unknowns, but they emerged as first-time provincial champions.

“Everyone wanted to know where Burnsview was,” laughed Griffins’ head coach Mary Ferguson after her North Delta-based side scored early in the second half to beat North Vancouver’s Windsor Dukes 1-0 in the first of two semifinals at the 2011 provincial tournament, in the midst of its three-day run at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. “That’s all we got. They wanted to know who we were.”

Just to prove last season was no fluke, the Griffins have booked their second straight berth in the B.C. final, and they will face the Ballenas Whalers from Parksville in Saturday’s 11 a.m. final. Ballenas went to overtime to beat Burnaby’s St. Thomas More Knights 2-1.

Burnsview’s only strike came in the 50th minute of the 70-minute game.

Grade 9 forward Emma Leese took a pass from just outside the penalty area from Michelle Knowland and got off a quick shot from six yards out that found the back of the net.

“We were carrying the play,” said Ferguson. “They were a good team but we had more chances at net. We had one scary moment where they had a deflection late in the game and they could have scored there.”

Still, Burnsview’s defensive strength has been the key.

“Coming in defending the title is a little tougher,” said Ferguson. “And we’re such a defensive team. We have a fabulous defensive team and we won with defence last year. But we are not scoring a lot of goals.”

That defensive presence, both on theback line and in midfield, has comes from the likes of Olivia Kapelli, Rebecca Delorey, Julie Devriendt, Jessia Turner and Danika Wadley.

The Whalers, a Triple-A sized girls school until this season, will play for the first girls provincial soccer title in school history following its nail-biter over the Knights.

After STMC had opened the scoring in the 12th minute off a corner kick, the Whalers were able to manufacture a number of quality scoring chances but left things until the last minute of regulation.

That’s when Rachel Jones took a well-placed through-ball from Emma Greig, slotting the ball neatly home off the side of her foot to end the game into overtime.

Four minutes into the extra frame, the same two Whalers hooked up to make the big catch, this time Greig putting a through-ball to Jones who scored from 12 yards out.

“We had five or six chances to score and their keeper made a huge save in overtime,” said Ballenas head coach Larry Stefanek.

TRIPLE A

KAMLOOPS — The Claremont Spartans of Victoria will be looking to win a second straight B.C Triple A title today at McArthur Island Sports Complex, but to do it, they’ll have to beat the team they beat in the 2010 final.

Friday’s two semifinals scripted a rematch of the 2010 finals.

Claremont topped South Delta’s Sun Devils 3-0, while North Vancouver’s Argyle Pipers beat host South Kamloops Titans 2-1.

“The semifinal was definitely challenging,” admitted Argyle head coach Darren Rath after senior Jessie DeBoer scored both of her team’s goals. “South Kam, when their whole school showed up, it gave them an inpsrational boost and the played so hard.

“But (Argyle) is on a mission of determination to graduate as champions and we are playing extremely well. The girls are battling for everything they get and however they do tomorrow, they will have earned it. They deserve to be in the final.”

The Pipers opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Mikaela Kautzky won a ball, and flicked it on to DeBoer who with a defender draped on her, calmly slotted the ball home low to the far post.

After a counter-attack off an Argyle giveaway led to the Titans equalizing, DeBoer scored what proved to be the winner when she took a throw-in from Denise Newall, beat three defenders, then dribbled into the penalty area with a series of defenders on her back, scoring from eight yards out.

“It was quite amazing how she got the shot away,” said Rath. “It was sheer determination and will power.”

Saturday’s final is slated for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff.

KAMLOOPS — Jessie DeBoer’s penchant for goals and a quest to win the B.C title that eluded them last season proved to be a winning recipe for North Vancouver’s Argyle Pipers.

After losing in the 2010 championship final last June to Victoria’s Claremont Spartans, Argyle came back with a vengeance and topped their Island rivals in a championship rematch Saturday in Kamloops to win the B.C. Triple A soccer title.

“The girls they were on a mission and it was their sheer determination to graduate as champions,” said Pipers’ head coach Darren Rath after a 5-2 win over the Spartans. “We got off to the start we wanted and it carried us through.”

DeBoer, who won the Golden Boot award after scoring eight times in five tournament games, scored twice in the first six minutes of play. And although Claremont was able to equalize with a pair of goals, Argyle went up 3-2 at the half when Danica Mitchell scored what proved to be the winning goal off a corner kick two minutes before the break.

Gillian Brownlow buried the rebound of a Kate Steele blast to open the second-half scoring for Argyle, then DeBoer sent Alexandra Aulin-Hayes forward for the final tally of the contest.

“She was an unstoppable force up front and when we needed her to drop into midfield to win headers she went right to the centre of the park and kept up her work rate,” said Rath of DeBoer. “She was not going to be denied.”

DOUBLE A

BURNABY — Mary Ferguson wasn’t about to call it a dynasty, but whatever it is, the Burnsview Griffins have got a good thing going with their senior girls soccer program.

Michelle Wessa’s 49th-minute strike lifted the Griffins to a 1-0 win over Parksville’s Ballenas Whalers as the B.C. Girls Double A championships wrapped up a three-day run at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Burnsview, which had never won a B.C. senior varsity championship in any sport until the girls soccer team won it all for the first time in 2010, put forth such an incredible defensive performance on the week, that it did not allow a single goal in any of the five matches it played. And Saturday’s championship win the culmination of that defensive effort.

“The other team was really only able to break through once,” said Burnsview head coach Ferguson, who added that midfielders Julie Devriendt and tournament MVP Elexis Schlossarek were excellent throughout. “This was a phenomonal team, a team with girls full of heart.”

Devriendt battled with a pair of Ballenas player to win the ball and was able to find Wessa who was able to get into the 18-yard area and score the winning goal.

VICTORIA — The easiest way to quantify what Shalie Dheensaw brings to the basketball court is to label her by her towering height of 6-foot-3.

Yet the standout senior post player with Victoria’s Claremont Secondary Spartans has always held herself to a more intangible system of measure.

“I feel personally that I have to work harder just because the people who haven’t seen me, they just think I am tall and slow,” explains Dheensaw, who has been known to supplement her regimen of on-court skill development and weight-room work with solo sprinting drills on her high school track. “In workouts, I want to be the post that keeps up with the wings, the player who is able to play in the offence as fast as they want me to. I want to be able to do it all: drive from the wing, jump shot from the high post, hook shot in the low post.”

It’s her quest to become the most complete player she can be that has Dheensaw climbing the ladder within the Canadian national team program, where last summer she represented her country at the FIBA World Under-17 championships in France. And in the fall, Dheensaw is headed off to an NCAA Div. 1 career in the Pac 12 Conference at Washington State University.

What she’ll bring with her are the memories of magical senior season with the Spartans, a campaign which fell one aching win shy of the B.C. Triple A chamionship title in March.

“The ending was a little unfortunate,” Dheensaw says of the title game loss to Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Hawks. “But I was proud of how we played, how we didn’t let a big deficit affect what we did, and how we improved in every single game.”

The Spartans trailed by 15 points with just over five minutes remaining in the title game, but after Dheensaw and teammate Shayln Crisp engineered a rally over the next four minutes that pulled the Spartans to within just three points, the Hawks finally won by five. Dheensaw was named a first-team all-star and finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

All of her qualities are treasured by June Daugherty, her coach-to-be at Washington State, who lauded her “outstanding talent, speed and athleticism in the post.

“She is a die-hard worker with dedication to become the absolute best player,” added Daugherty.

In the end, it’s that system of measure that has Shalie Dheensaw standing her tallest.

SCHOOL: W.J. MOUAT (ABBOTSFORD)

FRESHMAN’S FUTURE: FRASER VALLEY

1768.Sartori blog1 Kayli Sartori

Kayli Sartori found time to stretch out and get comfy during her 2011 Head of the Class photo shoot. (Arlen Redekop, PNG)

ABBOTSFORD — Kayli Sartori has always been a country girl with an appetite for big adventures.

That’s why, in a lot of ways, the basketball court at North Vancouver’s Capilano University, where she led her W.J. Mouat Hawks to the B.C. Triple A title in March, was a lot like her 200-acre family farm just outside of Cultus Lake.

“We’d go hiking, biking in the mountains, swimming in the rivers, all the dangerous stuff,” Sartori laughs, recalling the endless summer days of her early childhood. “My mom would always tell me that if I wanted to go, I had to be good and that I wasn’t allowed to cry.”

Well, tears were most definitely allowed in the post-game euphoria this past March 12 when the 6-foot-1 Sartori helped propel the Abbotsford school to its first-ever provincial hoops title following a 69-64 win over Victoria’s Claremont Spartans.

For Sartori, headed to a CIS career next season with the rapidly-improving Fraser Valley Cascades, the peaks and valleys of that final high school game were just like a danger-filled hike through all manner of hazardous terrain. But in the end, after scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, she helped lead the Hawks out of the wilderness, emerging as the tournament’s MVP.

“My mom made me go to tryouts, but in Grade 7 I hated basketball,” admits Sartori, whose combination of guard and forward skills made her perhaps the toughest player to guard this season. “I couldn’t make layups. I was horrendous. But then I fell in love with the game.

“And once the MVP was called, and it was me, I was like ‘I have finally pushed myself to be the player I want to be.’ And now, I want to push myself even further.”

However tough the road gets, here’s betting she knows how to handle it.

“I played six years of community football with the boys,” she smiles, before adding “Yes, full tackle.”

No, she wasn’t a kicker. She lined up as a receiver, and also manned both inside and outside spots as a linebacker.

It’s a resume that does more than suggest that Kayli Sartori is ready for another big adventure.

Hayward bound for greater things as Mt. Doug’s middle distance star transitions from strokes to strides

Katelyn Hayward has already shown a lot in the formative stages of her middle-distance running career.

Yet when you consider that she is less than a year into making a fulltime transition from national-level swimmer to national-level runner, the most fitting way to describe her is to say that the senior from Victoria’s Mt. Douglas Secondary has only shown the tip of the iceberg.

“She has what we call a really strong engine,” remarks Victoria Vikes track coach Keith Butler of Hayward, a perennial national age class competitor in the backstroke who this past January gave up the pool to concentrate solely on running, and has recently begun regular training sessions with the Vikes’ CIS women’s team. “Aerobically, she is extremely fit and she has managed some amazing results with very little running.”

Hayward’s performance last June at the Subway B.C. high school track and field championships was a real eye opener for anyone following the sport.

In the 3,000 metres, her finishing kick over the final 200 metres en route to a gold medal-winning time of 9:55.44 was more than substantial proof of not only that engine, but of the killer instinct she possesses. And more evidence of her grit came in 1,500-metre steeplechase final where she broke a 10-year meet record by almost a full second to win in 4:58.85.

And now, despite having run competitively on the trails just once in her life, Hayward has garnered the No. 1 girls cross-country ranking in advance of the B.C. championship race scheduled Nov. 5 in Kelowna (see boys and girls individual and team rankings below).

“Having my focus go this year entirely from swimming to track, I wanted to challenge myself in something completely new, so that’s why I decided to join the cross country team,” says Hayward, 16, who had been swimming competitively since the age of eight and had qualified for three age-class national meets as a member of Pacific Coast Swimming. “It was hard to switch because I miss all of my swimming friends, but the good thing is that a lot of them go to Mt. Doug, so I still see them.”
And if some of those friends happened to stop by the track at UVic, they’d see a high schooler training with a core of CIS athletes as much as five years her senior.

“It’s been great to have Keith and Brent (Fougner) coaching me,” Hayward says of the Vikes’ coaches. “The practices are a lot harder now, but it’s a nice change to be practicing against higher level girls who are so much older. They have done so well and so it’s been exciting to think that potentially that could be me in a few years.”

Hayward’s rapid rise in the ultra-competitive middle-distance realm has presented her with the kinds of travel and competition that she was not getting from her swimming career.

Two summer ago, she was a part of the Canadian team that took part in the very first Youth Olympics in Singapore. And this past summer, she once again represented Canada, this time at the World Youth track and field championships.

“That has been a really neat experience,” says Hayward. “That chance to get to know a lot of different people, and the whole travelling thing is all very new to me. I hadn’t travelled a lot. So to experience something so different, and to compete against people who are at such a high level has been amazing.”

And speaking of different experiences, running cross country certainly qualifies for Hayward.

In fact when she was told Tuesday that the new rankings had her at No. 1 despite having just one competitive race under her belt, her reaction was of complete surprise.

“No. 1? For cross country? OK,” she said. “I am actually surprised because I have only run one race. It went well. But it’s nice to hear that, it’s very encouraging for my training.”

Hayward sits atop a field that is filled with returning talent.

Defending champion Tanya Humeniuk of Vancouver’s Killarney Secondary is perched at No. 2 and last season placed second to Hayward in the high school 3,000. Langley-Walnut Grove’s Ashley Windsor, the second-place finisher last season, is ranked No. 3. And rising steeplechase and cross-country standout Regan Yee of Hazelton sits at No. 4.

Vancouver’s West Point Grey Academy is ranked No. 1 among girls teams.

On the boys side, last season’s top two returning finishers occupy the top two spots. Christian Gravel of Vancouver-St. George’s is ranked No. 1 coming off a second-place finish at last year’s final. Deon Clifford of Surrey-Earl Marriott, the fourth-place finisher in 2010, is ranked No. 2.

Surrey’s Kwantlen Park, which feature No. 3-ranked runner Tim Delcourt, sits at No. 1 in the boys team rankings. Delcourt finished sixth last season at provincials.
